About Vines to Volcanoes

My love for wine and desire to share that love with others inspired me to start a wine tasting club in my local community. The idea came to me one day while sitting at my desk wishing I had more friends to nerd out about wine with and within 10 minutes, Wine Club INW was born. We’re a small club, meeting at my house or another club member’s house once a month to taste and discuss wine from various regions around the world. Part of my wine club experience is to send a monthly newsletter announcing our featured wine region of the month with a background on the history, terroir, and notable wines from the region. A couple of my club members suggested I create a space where they could review past newsletters to brush up on their regional wine knowledge, and from that, a blog!

As far as the name, Vines to Volcanoes goes, geology and wine are a natural pairing. You’ll find many a winemaker with a background in geology and many a geologist with a deep love for wine. Perhaps that connection comes down to terroir - the soil, geography, topography, climate - that is so important to the outcome of the wine. Wine tells a story of the land where its vineyards are cultivated, from the floral aromatics of a Beaujolais wine grown in decomposed schist to the distinctive savory notes of a lush red wine grown in basalt cobbles in the Rocks District of Walla Walla.

An additional note from the author:

I’ve never considered myself to be a writer (seriously, I wasn’t even sure if I should call myself “the author” above). I despised writing research papers and reports in school - beyond laying out the facts, I had a hard time filling a paper to the minimum page requirement. I was creative in other ways - I was an actor and I was crafty, but with my own words, forget it. Throughout this journey into the world of wine, though, writing found me and I’ve come to embrace it. And although I enjoy it, I still have my reservations and fears. I don’t fear that people won’t like my writing - I’m old enough to know that I can’t please everyone, and that’s okay. What I’m more afraid of is misinformation, getting something wrong, leading you astray (and also this fear of “getting in trouble” that stems from my childhood… ohmygosh, what if this blog gets me in trouble??)! So, I ask you this. If you find incorrect information within any of my blog posts, I ask you to kindly send me an email letting me know. I understand it’s not critical information I’m throwing out there, but posting incorrect information is not what I’m about! With that, on top of my general knowledge base on wine and geology, I do spend hours upon hours on each blog post conducting as thorough research as I can so that I can write a kick ass post for you!

Thank you and much love,
Teresa
